  2. 3rd Saturday Garden Tours at Allerton Park

    September 18, 2021, 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM @ Allerton Park and Retreat Center

Allerton Park has 14 formal gardens, created by Robert Allerton between 1899 and 1946. Reserve your spot to attend one of our Third Saturday Garden Tours (April - October) to experience the beauty of each garden while listening to the history behind its creation. Each tour takes you through several of the formal gardens at Allerton and around the exterior of the Mansion. You will learn about the history of the estate and the man who created it, including information about the most iconic sculptures in the Park. For more information, contact Mindy Brand at or call 217-333-3287. Find the map of the Formal Gardens here - (Please note the tour will not include all of the gardens.)

  3. Weekend Train Rides

    September 18, 2021, 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM @

    Monticello Railway Museum

The Museum is open for train rides on Saturdays and Sundays from May through early October. You may board the train at the Nelson Crossing depot (the main Museum site) or at the Wabash Depot in downtown Monticello. Layovers at either depot are encouraged. You can walk through the museum cars and view many pieces of rolling stock at the museum site, as well as visit the Museum's gift shop. Normally our trains are pulled by one of our vintage diesel locomotives. Our restored steam locomotive Southern #401 operates roughly once a month. To see dates for steam operation, see our steam schedule. Diesel cab rides are available on most trips on a first-come, first-serve basis for a $20 surcharge above the normal adult fare. Cab rides are not available on steam or special event weekends. A maximum of two cab riders can be accommodated per trip.
