Police Chief John Miller
Monticello Police Chief John Miller leads the police department with a total of 30 years of police experience, the last thirteen years serving Monticello. After receiving an Associates degree in Law Enforcement, Chief Miller earned both his B.A., in Police Administration, and his Masters Degree, in Public Police Administration, from the University of Illinois in Springfield. Chief Miller retired from the U.S. Army Reserve Military Police Corps after 26 years. Of those years, he spent 14 years as a Military Police Instructor. Chief Miller is also Monticello's DARE officer.

Officers
Six full time and three part-time officers make up the Monticello Police force. All are skilled in rapid deployment, rifle, shotgun, handgun, taser use and instruction, police photography, and crime scene investigation. Five officers also serve as the TRIAD and juvenile officers.

In February of 2007, Officer Jim Nayonis was promoted to Deputy Chief of Police by Chief Miller and the Monticello City Council.

Equipment
The Police Department fleet consists of eight fully equiped Chevrolet Impalas; three of which were purchased in 2003. The department owns two Automatic Defibrillators to provide first response care to aid Kirby Ambulance Service and the Monticello Fire Department.  In 2007, the Monticello Police Department added an EMS mobile command trailer to its inventory.

Programs
Monticello is a DARE, Drug Abuse Resistance Education, community. Chief Miller teaches 6 DARE lessons on an annual basis to 5th graders at Washington Grade School. The lessons focus on peer and life skills needed to help our youth say "NO TO DRUGS". At the end of the lessons the students participate in the DARE graduation, which honors the students.  Parents are welcomed and encouraged to attend the graduation, as they need to follow up on the lessons taught to the students.

The department offers a Vacation Watch program. While residents are gone on vacation, the officers will check their homes nightly. To request this service, Monticello residents should contact the Police Department, 762-7727, at least one week before their departure. The Police will need to know arrival and departure dates, what lights, if any, will be left on, what vehicles will be present and who will be checking the house.

Monticello Police Officers perform foot patrols each shift, day and night. The foot patrol officers provide daytime and nighttime coverage for the downtown business district, all city parks, the school grounds, and other public areas.

Curfew
It is unlawful for a person less than 18 years of age to be present at or upon any public assembly, building, place, street or highway at the following times unless accompanied and supervised by a parent, legal guardian or other responsible companion at least 18 years of age and approved by a parent or legal guardian or unless engaged in a business or occupation which the laws of this State authorize a person less than 18 years of age to perform:

1. Between 12:01 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. Saturday;
2. Between 12:01 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. Sunday; and
3. Between 10:30 p.m. on Sunday to Thursday, inclusive, and 6:00 a.m. on the following day.
