The Monticello Fire and Rescue is a public department made up of 20 volunteer fire professionals with 18 of the 20 members achieving certified Fire Fighter II status.  The department is headed up by Chief Rick Dubson who joined the department in April of 1981.

The department protects over 5,000 people in a seven square mile area.

Due in part to the excellent job of the fire department the ISO rating was lowered to a 5.  For citizens and businesses, this means lower insurance rates than other cities of similar size.

The Fire Department was awarded a $15,000 FEMA Fire Act Grant for live born training.  Burn containers were purchased at placed at the training grounds on Allerton Road.   Fires can be started in these containers letting smoke and heat build up to simulate a house fire.  The department then enters the containers to practice search and rescue procedures.

The fire trainining grounds, located outside of town on Allerton Road, include a repelling tower, the burn containers, as well as several vehicles for the department to use for training.  Once a month, the department participates in training exercises to keep their knowledge and abilities fresh.

Two new firetrucks were added to the fleet in the past four years, and new state of the art extrication equipment was recently purchased to better serve the department in vehicular rescues.  One of the retired firetrucks, as well as the replaced extrication equipment, found a new home in Monticello, Mississippi following hurricane Katrina.
