What is the Planning Commission? The Planning Commission is a group of seven commissioners appointed by the Mayor. The Commission advises the City Council on all matters related to any amendments to the City's Zoning Ordinance, as well as petitions for conditional use permits and rezoning of parcels within the City of Monticello.
When and where does the Planning Commission meet? The City of Monticello Planning Commission meets on an as-needed basis. The meetings are typically scheduled on weeknights at 7pm, and are located at the Monticello Municipal Building Council Chambers, 210 N. Hamilton, Monticello.
What is the process at a planning commission hearing? The Chairman of the Planning Commission will introduce the purpose(s) of the meeting, followed by a brief overview of the project by the City's Zoning Administrator. The petitioner will then answer any questions from the Planning Commission, followed by public testimony. The Planning Commission will then vote to make a recommendation to the City Council on the agenda item(s). The City Council has the final decision on the petition, and usually votes on the issue at the following Council meeting.
Who do I contact if I am interested in nomination for the Planning Commission? The Mayor of the City of Monticello appoints all commissioners to one-year terms. All inquiries regarding seating on the Commission, should be directed to the Mayor.
Why did I receive a certified notice? As required by state statute, any time a parcel of land is petitioned for rezoning, a conditional use or variation from the City's Zoning Ordinance, all adjacent property owners must be sent a certified notice informing of the petition and meeting date. Property owners can then choose to attend the hearing and/or give testimony in relation to the petition.
Who do I contact if I have questions about a pending hearing? Contact the City of Monticello's Zoning Administrator at 217.762.2583. You may also contact the Planning Commissioners.
